Brevium Data Science: Some Specialties May Have a “Recall Gap” in H1 2021

  • February 3, 2021

Brevium has a large, nation-wide database of the patient appointment lifecycle™ that is constantly being updated. This allows our data science team to analyze trends in patient demand and develop best practices to improve practice revenue and patient outcomes.

With the widespread office closures due to the COVID pandemic that occurred in many localities from March to May of 2020, a variety of medical specialties may see a recall gap in March to May of 2021. This drop in recall demand may indicate a drop in demand for appointments of as much as 50% from normal.

Brevium has analyzed national data and found that scheduling for treatment of chronic disease is based on:

  • When a patient was last seen
  • When the diagnoses warrant follow-up and
  • How often insurance pays for exams to manage chronic disease

Shifting three months of care for the majority of patients forward three months effectively also shifted future care out for those patients by three months, leaving a hole in the schedule for this spring.

CASE EXAMPLE

Consider a diabetic patient who was initially scheduled for an annual exam in March of 2020. Due to closures for COVID, that patient’s exam may have been pushed to June 2020. After their visit, their recall or appointment for their next annual exam is then set for June 2021. With many patients deferring care this way between March and May of 2020, it has created a situation where fewer patients have recalls set to go out between March – May, 2021.

Recall demand for OB/GYN practices for H1 2021:

What can be done to mitigate this gap?

Most practices have a large backlog of patients who are lost to recall or reluctant to return to care. Brevium software brings these patients back through a variety of outreach methods and communication sequences, a process known as patient reactivation. Taking action by targeting these patients and focusing on bringing them back to the practice during the early part of 2021 may help to fill the recall gap in H1.

Brevium is able to forecast for your practice the size of the recall gap you are facing, as well the pace of reactivation that you will need to mitigate this gap. We also project the likely revenue generated and software costs, allowing you to forecast the ROI even before beginning the reactivation effort.
